Luke 4:34-35, 41 NIV
34 “Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
I always thought it was weird that Jesus doesn’t let the demons say who he is. I mean, they say he’s God and he tells them to shut up?!? Are you kidding me? Isn’t that the point of the whole Bible and everything? Why is Jesus not letting people hear who he is?
Then I read somewhere that Jesus wanted people to figure it out from themselves, not believe based on what the demons say. And that makes sense. He even asks Peter and the disciples who everyone is saying he is. But then he asks, “but who do you say I am?” He just wants us to be able to understand for ourselves.
It’s good to hear about Jesus from other people, and read about him in the Bible. But at some point, I have to decide, who do I say that he is? Because, its totally different for me to hear that someone thinks he’s God, and for me to call him my Lord. And I think that’s something I should bother to get right. I mean, even the demons get that part right.
Lord, help me to know who you are in my life, and to stand firm in that knowledge.
Luke 1:35-37 NIV
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month.37 For nothing is impossible with God.”
Nothing is impossible. God can do anything. Virgin having a baby? Yep. Old woman, way too old to have kids, pregnant? Yep. It can happen. Nothing is impossible with God.
This passage, this event, makes me think of other accounts of God doing mighty things. An old man (Moses) raised his hands and parted the sea. A small group of 300 men led by Gideon defeated an entire army. Elijah covered an offering in water until it was soaked, and God sent a fire that consumed the offering, the soaked wood, and even the wet stones!
Nothing is impossible with God.
Planetshakers wrote a song about it. And all the lyrics are based on scripture. God can do anything. He has in the past. He does now. And He will again in the future.
He has done amazing things in and through me, and I can’t forget that. I mean, its possible, but it’s unacceptable that I forget. I must remember His deeds in the past, so that I will trust Him to do things now, and hope for incredible things to come.
LORD, help me to remember your glory. Let me see your works now. And give me a burning hope for what is to come… in Jesus’ name, amen.
Psalm 69:27-28 NIV
27 Charge them with crime upon crime;
do not let them share in your salvation.
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life
and not be listed with the righteous.
Revelation 20:12-15 NIV
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.15 If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
There are books containing our deeds. On the Judgement Day, after the Second Coming of Christ, we will be judged by what we have done. But then there is another book. And that is the Book of Life. The only ones thrown into the fire are Satan, demons, and anyone whose name is NOT in the Book of Life.
The book of life contains the names of the righteous in Christ. Not good people, but the ones who have a relationship with Jesus. That is the only thing stopping us from being thrown into eternal fire, our names showing up in that book. And all we have to do is follow Christ to get our name in the book. Hallelujah for that!
Thank you God. May my life be worthy of your gospel and your glory. It’s all for you. Amen.
I’ve been sketching these negative space typography pieces lately, and I wanted to try a few of them as designed pieces.
Since the negative space is part of the design, i can’t really go big on background. I might try adding something later, but for now, I really like the result.
What do you think?
“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah. Today they lie deserted and in ruins
because of the evil they have done. They provoked me to anger by burning incense and by worshiping other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew.
Jeremiah 44: 2-3
The LORD tells the people why they are being punished: they offered sacrifices and worshipped other gods in the streets and in the temple of the LORD. They sinned! But they don’t get it. Check this out:
“We will not listen to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord! …
But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.”
They are missing the point.
They are so deep in their sin they’ve lost sight of the promise of punishment for it. They can’t even imagine that God would really be mad about their worshipping other gods. Even worse, they lived in their sin so long they forgot it was sin. When God confronts them about it, they actually have fooled themselves into thinking that their blessing came from their sin!
I can totally relate to the Israelites’ perspective. It’s dumb, and I know that, but I have totally been there. I have actually thought that my sin is blessing me and God’s conviction calling me back to him is bad for me. It’s amazing how quickly we can lie to ourselves and completely lose sight of reality.
Lord, may you keep me from my own delusions and open my ears to hear your voice as truth. Always. Amen.
Ok, so tonight was amazing. God moved and we worshipped Him in it. Bonfires just feel more holy. So good. Thanks for coming all you who came out. For the rest of you… be there next time. God showed up, you should, too.
So last night at LIT Youth was a crazy night: we had an awesome band, but we also said goodbye to two of our veteran leaders, Jaeden & Niki.
The goodbye was bittersweet. Their absence will be felt, for sure. But there is joy in knowing that God is doing a new thing with them, We sent them off with prayer and a blessing, and we are excited to see what they are able to do for the Kingdom in the future.
The fun part of the night came in the form of Canaan’s Creed, a band of teenagers from San Juan Capistrano. They led us in worship, then rocked us with a cover set/mini-concert at the end of service. Their covers included: Crazy by Gnarls Barkley and Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. They were awesome, and we’ll have to have them back out soon!
Here are a couple of photos of the band:
